Nifty sideways -- timings - 10:30 to 1 PM

  • Most Sideways Time: 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM is the period of lowest volatility.
  • Total Sideways Duration: Roughly 2 to 3 hours a day, often starting as early as 10:30 AM and lasting until the "afternoon resumption" around 1:00 PM.
  • Why it happens: Big players (FIIs/DIIs) often wait for European markets to open (around 12:30–1:00 PM IST) before making their next major move.

  • Checklist: Is the Nifty Breakout Real or a Fakeout?
  • Before entering an ORB trade, check these three "filters":
    1. Volume Confirmation: Is the breakout candle's volume significantly higher than the previous 5 candles? Low-volume breakouts are often traps.
    2. The "Close" Rule: Does the candle actually close above the 15-minute high? Many traders jump in as soon as the price touches a new high, but "smart money" often pushes it back before the candle closes.
    3. Wick vs. Body: Is the breakout candle a strong "Marubozu" (mostly body, little wick)? If the candle has a tiny body and a very long wick above the breakout level, it is a classic trap. [1, 2, 3, 4]
